No matter what your personal style, these essentials are for you.
No matter what your favorite colors are, and no matter what your body shape is, there are five essentials that everyone should have in their wardrobe.
Personally I have culled my wardrobe twice now and should probably do it once more. I got rid of a lot of things that I don’t really wear anymore or that are no longer within my style.
This was probably the hardest thing for me to do because I knew my style was changing but I wasn’t sure exactly where it was going so it was difficult to figure out what to keep and what to donate. One thing that helped a lot was that I picked a theme for my wardrobe. A color theme.
Black is the new Black
So now my wardrobe is 90% black. The two other colors I chose, my accent colors, are purple and gold. This is strictly speaking of my actual clothing. I decided to keep accessories fun and colorful including shoes.
Personally my wardrobe now is a mixture of vintage pieces from the 40s through the 70s and a bit of rock ‘n’ roll motorcycles style. Whatever that means. Black. Lots of black. And fringe.
The wardrobe essentials list
Even if your personal style is a little more preppy or sporty or goth or traditional 1950s pinup, these 5 wardrobe essentials will still work for you and help to pull everything together.
First thing on the list is a good coat, preferably a long fitted one.
A nice coat should be able to stand alone as an outfit itself (over a dress) or as a part of your outfit (with pants/jeans) but never as a cover up. Neutrals work great for coats, especially if you will only have one. Think beige, tan, grey, black if you like, or olive tones. personally I like to have multiple coats and I DONT stick to neutrals. But this works for me because my wardrobe is mostly black.
Remember that your jewelry, shoes and scarves/gloves should be able to easily pair with your coat too. its easy to overlook this.
This coat also comes in black but for the sake of “Neutrals” I posted the tan version. But the black is better IMHO
This is a little more my style honestly. I do love the swing dress coat but I feel like this trench coat would get way more usage from me.
Second thing that you should own is a pencil skirt.
I would actually suggest two of these if not more.
One cotton/jersey material for warm weather and casual wear for things like grocery shopping or running errands. Also get one In a heavier material or patterned for going out or professional settings.
You can never go wrong with Faux leather!!
Basic Cotton High-waist Pencil Skirt
Get this in ALL the colors! They are so easy to wear. My fav way to wear these is with a rad vintage fitted tee and converse.
Another wardrobe staple is a camisole.
Find a neutral color or one of your secondary wardrobe colors if you’re going that route.
For example, a good cami can do ‘romantic date’ paired with a great skirt, or ‘rock-casual’ AF with a slim fit pair of jeans. Again this can fit any style with the right colors and accessories.
Anna-Kaci Leopard Spaghetti Strap
No wardrobe is complete without a pair of black pumps.
These can be stilettos if that’s more your style or 2 inch heel if you’re more into the comfort shoe.
But having a black pump, no matter how fancy or what size heel, will be able to take pretty much any casual outfit to a nighttime look. Just take a look at these. I really want every pair actually.

And last but not least of course the little black dress.
The LBD if you will.
I know, I know, everybody already knows about the little black dress and how important it is as a staple in your closet, however it’s cliché for a reason. The little black dress can do so many things. Its the chameleon piece of your wardrobe.
Casual, professional, date night, formal wedding reception, awards event, picnic, business meeting, and day to night. All you need for this dress to work for you is a few killer accessories to bring out your personal style.

The rest of it
If you have these five essential pieces in your closet then you are well on your way to a super versatile wardrobe. Obviously you will need more than this for it to be considered an actual wardrobe. Lets talk about the non essential wardrobe pieces now.
Well actually, I don’t know if these are non essential but I guess less important wardrobe pieces? IDK
The other pieces I would recommend to have are:
~Denim Jeans. You can get these according to your body shape and style but I do recommend very dark blue jeans and a pair of black denim jeans.
~Sneakers. I LOVE CONVERSE. They are probably the most versatile sneaker I’ve ever owned and you can get them in almost any color or combination of colors. Same with the Adidas Superstar.
~A pair of boots. These should reflect your style. Booties, Doc Martens, Harley boots, cowboy boots, knee boots, stiletto thigh highs… Whatever your flavor, a pair of boots are a must.
~A vintage t-shirt. This can be a band shirt, a sporty style ringer, retro striped tee, etc.
~A duster or pull over sweater. light weight is better so it can be layered.
~Pair of flats. I like ones that can double as casual or semi dressy. The more pieces I can pair them with the more likely I am to buy them.
~Floor length skirt or dress that can be layered.
~Faux leather jacket. I prefer moto style but there are a lot of really nice ones available.
~Some rad accessories that reflect your personal style. Think belts, necklaces, hats, bags, and even sunglasses.
Hell yeah there’s hella Amazon Affiliate links in this post because I love Amazon. I order it, it shows up two days later. It’s kinda the best shopping a girl can do nowadays. It’s rare when I don’t shop on amazon to be honest and it has to be something very particular that I want from a specific brand.
Any who, I hope this was a little helpful for anyone trying to cull their closet or just trying to make better wardrobe decisions. If you have anything that should be added to this list please lmk. I love to hear from you all.
